Its not really a quote, but the Bixby letter is a work of art.

Do not know much about Napoleonic wars, but this one really stuck with me.

Because perhaps unlike belief in ancient times, war is not glorious. A very sobering quote.

Context:  After defeating the Romans in 2 consecutive battles during the Pyrrhic War, Pyrrhus reportedly replied to one that gave him joy of his victory that one other such victory would utterly undo him. For he had lost a great part of the forces he brought with him, and almost all his particular friends and principal commanders; there were no others there to make recruits, and he found the confederates in Italy backward.  The term 'Pyrrhic Victory' is coined from this general as a 'victory' that is so costly it may as well have been a defeat.  Among the generals of antiquity, Pyrrhus was said to have ranked only behind Alexander the Great.
