How does one counter dogs?

Shield bash, or kill the handlers, or charge them after they are already in melee.

If they set dogs on you, do you charge the dogs as they approach?  That's what I do, or should I let them attack me and I go for the handlers who are usually at distance and I have slow armour.

I play dogs a lot and playing dogs can be a bit of a coin toss as far as how our game goes as 1/5 times we're outnumbered and useless (It's a tricky class). I have found that dogs do not fair well at all against swordsman so you can typically stick close to or run towards friendly swordsman to get away.
