What in the world are "Reputation Points" that are tallied in player profiles??

And how are they accumulated and are they good for anything substantial?
If you can't beat'em, join'em; (and wait for a better opportunity to strike).

At the bottom right of other users posts you can see a green up arrow and a 0. If you click that up arrow it grants them 1 reputation point. You can't upvote yourself. Basically it is like praising somebody's content or agreeing with them but not posting a reply. They provide no benefits on the forums besides maybe some badges down the road. Zero impact on the game and zero non-forum rewards.
